Note: As Waking Ideas is intended to be a catalyst for interesting dinner conversation, we try to focus on the positive, exciting things people create. However with the inevitable conversations happening across the country about the tragic event in Colorado, we will spend a few posts covering both the event and the actions in response to it. The same attention will be given to events that impact the dinner table conversations on a national level in the future.

The release of The Dark Knight Rises was tainted by the tragic incident in Aurora, Colorado ending with 12 dead and many more injured. Many politicians, political commentators, and others with political ambitions and agendas have used this horrible event as an opportunity for their own advancement. While I will address this further in a later article, I do want to point out that this very thing is one of the core principles addressed in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Characters good and evil act outside the law and attempt to lie, cheat, and steal their way toward accomplishing their goals. Do the ends justify the means? I’m sure the motivations and intentions of the killer at the movie theater will be deeply investigated during the inevitable court trial.
William Parker III of OpenPluto wrote this as an excellent reminder to those wary of going to the movie theaters in the wake of the attack:
Without a shadow of a doubt one of the worst things to happen in quite some time, but don’t let some jerk-off who wants to grow up and be The Joker ruin this epic movie or punch holes in your desire to leave the house.

I saw The Dark Knight Rises on Saturday late in the evening. The theater was packed and enthusiastic. I enjoyed the film but I will probably try to catch an early morning showing to see it without the distractions that come with a full theater: people getting up to head to the toilets or the concessions, crying babies being hushed, cell phone’s ringing and apologies being whispered, and so on. A full review will follow later this week.
